Too Busy to Read a Book?
I used to be miserable during my evening commute, but a friend
of mine at work told me that he "reads" audio books on this way to
work. Since then, audio books have kept me stimulated during those
otherwise tedious wasted drives.
Purchasing Hillary Clinton's re-release of her earlier work as
a book on tape and listening to it at the health club, I was able to
thoroughly work on both my body and my mind. And I finished the book
before it was even out of the news. Likewise, when packing for a
business trip, whether taking the train or driving, I am sure to bring
along several audio books on CD. They keep things interesting during
the journey, and they also make for great conversation when I arrive at
my destination.
I used to come home from work, collapse in my favorite chair
and flip on the TV. But I rarely decided to pick up anything with words
on it in the evening or on the weekends simply because I was worn out
from so many hours of scanning so many reports at work. Now, my spouse
and I select an audio book that interests us both to listen to for a
while before our evening meal. With our eyes and hands unoccupied we
are able to either sit and listen or to straighten the house.
These days, on any given day, I am reading at least three
books: one I listen to in my car during that commute, one I take to the
gym, and one my wife and I listen to at home when we really
can’t stand to watch another situation comedy. I enjoy the
boost of having a reputation as the most well-read person in the
neighborhood; moreover, being up to date both on current issues and
topics of historical importance gives me an invaluable perspective on
the news of the day.
I'd like to write more but I just heard that Barack
Obama’s Audacity of Hope is available in audio form on CD.
I'm sorry to end this, but I have important listening that I'm looking
forward to.
